Off to the markets!

CONVENT BAKERY – Abbotsford Convent, 1 Saint Heliers St, Abbotsford Victoria – (03) 9419 9426

So today was the Collingwood Children’s Farm Farmers Market at Abbotsford Convent and as we all know before a walk through the markets it’s important to have a spot of brunch šŸ™‚ We chose the Convent Bakery because it was the first one we saw and also because it has a great outdoor/picnic kind of feel so a great spot to chill out with a cup of coffee with your furry friend by your side.

Although, I have to say, I didn’t see a dog bowl around for water for my hairy little daughter, so FYI – BYO bowl for water! It was a lovely space though, felt so far removed from the city and we were relaxed immediately!

The freshly squeezed OJ was devine! The food, unfortunately was nothing to write home about or maybe we didn’t order the right dishes…? Next time we will try the other cafe inside the farmers’ market, The Farm Cafe (stay tuned for next month’s review)!

DSC_8447The market (it has a $2 entry fee and free for children) was fantastic!! There are so many stalls with local produce, everything from: fruits, vegetables, wines, cider, beer, cheese, herbs, chocolate – all farm fresh, organic, preservative free, biodynamic – you name it!

The best part about it is you know they are locally grown and produced often by the very people in the market selling them. In fact that’s what happened when we picked up this beautiful goat cheese called ‘Horizon’ from Boat Shed, the person serving us turned around and pointed at the lady next to him and said “she makes the cheese” – love it!

DSC_8456Or the Real Free Range Eggs where their flocks are guarded by a maremma dog! I think my hairy daughter found her poster boy on top of an egg carton! šŸ˜€ šŸ˜‰

Everyone is so passionate about their produce and happy to tell you all about it, and it’s refreshing to have that kind of honesty and soul in the food you are buying.DSC_8454

Best of all, the dogs had a GREAT time! They are on the lead of course, but with the fresh air and grass and the odd biscuit someone dropped on the ground – they were in heaven!

We give the Abbotsford bakery a 3/5 – mostly because of the location, and the relaxed atmosphere.

The farmers’ market however we would give a 5/5 – had such great variety and is a lovely outing with the whole family šŸ™‚
